America is set to finally end World War II with a devastating act--dropping the atomic bomb over Japan. But what if a secret mission was set in place to alter the course of history? In this fast-paced and imaginative thriller, the authors strike a brilliant chord between what was, and what might have been.
It is July 1945. Germany has surrendered, and the U.S. is poised for one last surge against the Japanese. Under pressure from both the press and the Washington politicos, Secretary of War Henry Stimson launches a mission so secret, not even the President knows. Dubbed Operation Big Stick, it is a subversive plot to warn the Japanese and get them to surrender. Charged with leading the daring mission is Captain Patrick Snyder, an impulsive, smart-talking intelligence officer, who fears what failure will bring, not only to himself, but to the entire world.
"From the chambers of Truman and Stalin at Potsdam to outposts in the Pacific…a suspenseful and well-constructed thriller."
--Publishers Weekly
"Well-plotted, well-paced…convey(s) the urgency surrounding the bomb in those final days of the war."
--Houston Chronicle

The decades-long debate over the atomic attacks at Hiroshima and Nagasaki usually asks the question of "why not just warn Japan?" instead of nuking a city without warning. This book imagines a secret mission to the Japanese to frighten them into surrender and the difficulties such a mission would face.I had two problems with this book. As a historian, I know the threat of the coming Cold War with the USSR did NOT play as great a role in the decision to drop the bomb as the author suggests. Instead, ihe military command was terrified of the casualties that would result from an invasion of Japan.
Rather than fight out the atomic bomb debate further here, I would like to focus on my other critique of this book. I love historical fiction when it is factually accurate, and the final act of this book headed to fantasy. The mad chase across the Pacific was simply not possible with the technology of the time. F7F fighters were not able to land on US carriers until 1949. As anyone who has studied the Battle of Leyte Gulf knows, radio messages were routinely delayed 4 to more hours as the military communications system never caught up to the sheer volume of message traffic, so the near-instant radio messages lining up carriers (that always operated in large, concentrated groups rather than spread over the ocean) for this chase wasn't possible.
Finally, I just didn't "get" some of the characters, particularly the female lead. She simply felt cardboard to me, swinging from disdain towards the male lead to infatuated far too quickly and without reason.
I burned through this book quickly and enjoyed it before the final part, so I'll give 3 stars.

Fair Warning eBook George E Simpson Neal R Burger Reviews
Intense, action packed look at what might have been. Deeply moving at times. Would appeal to a wide audience. Very good read.
The historical fiction plot was fairly intriguing, except that the ending seemed to search for a way out of a very difficult problem. It would have been a more plausible plot if the authors had conducted more in-depth research into the actual debate about dropping the first atomic weapon. A more accurate depiction of historical characters would have been presented. In addition, it might have added more historical factual information if the authors brought up the point that the US only had two atomic weapons after the test at Trinity. The explicit sex added absolutely nothing to this plot and was nothing more than a prurient diversion from an otherwise good book.
An interesting look at what could have been. Well written, keeps your interest, makes you turn the page, you want to know more.
Even though this is not my kind of subject I was riveted ! It is so well written. What a team
Albeit marked by stylistic flaws noted in other reviews, this book was a good read. The authors do an excellent job articulating the issues and questions that leaders grappled with at the end of the war, and paint a believable scenario regarding how such a story may have played itself out. The strongest point of the book is how all the subplots converge at the end. I couldn't put it down!
The two drawbacks are the explicit nature of the sexual scenes, and a tendency to change point of view too abruptly and without enough explanation, leaving the reader confused as to what was happening.
I do, however, think the book would be an excellent choice for a movie. The action and drama are compelling.
I almost didn't buy this book. After all, it is the story of a mission to convince the Japanese to surrender before an atomic bomb could be dropped. We know the bomb was in fact dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki so how could 500 pages of a failed mission be thrilling? Take my word for it, it is.
This book is well written, interesting throughout and ultimately very exciting.
I didn't finish "Fair Warning." I have read, and enjoyed, many alternate history books. I thought this would be another one I might enjoy rearing and re-reading. It started off fairly well, then seemed to tail off. I stopped reading, found another book and never have wanted to go back and finish.
I can't tell you why I didn't finish. I don't know if it was the plot or the characters weren't developed enough or they didn't ring true. "Fair Warning" was just not a book for me.
